Social Media; Are we addicts?

Okay, been a long time coming.. This is Uncle Frank's eagerly anticipated entrant into the Simplyfabulus family. We finally here, yaaay!
Smh! Anyways, now that I'm here, I thought I might as well address what predominantly brings you online; yes i'm talking to you.....and you. The older generation would call it our(Nigerian Youth) addiction to the Social media. Here's why I immediately had a problem with the concept, they use the word "addiction". Err.. It's not that deep, you say?! Addiction keh?? I thought so too, especially when I tried to define the term. Addiction describes an abnormal compulsion to do something, even in the face of grave consequences. What grave dangers could ensue from me wanting to chat and catch up with friends? How else do i reach out to old friends and acquaintances during this recession; everybody now knows the meaning of recession by the way, the other day my friend's 9 year old sister told me "Uncle Frank, I know there's recession but can you please give me money?", In my mind I was like "This girl would either end up a diplomat or a very successful aristo"..i didn't give her sha. I didn't have money with me so I told her to spell "Economic Recession" before I gave her the money, of course she couldn't spell it, I was off the hook for the time being.  Back to our discourse, we would readily argue that since all addictions are bad, then our love for the social media can't be an addiction as the good that comes out of it far outweighs the bad. I mean, lecturers these days prefer to send info on WhatsApp or via email.. Pastors now share prayer points on WhatsApp groups.. Social media saves stress, saves money in the long run, saves time.. Well said.

But here's the thing, not all addictions have a cataclysmically disastrous endgame (pardon the vocabulary, I just realized I needed to advertise myself.. I'm particularly skilled in making sack letters look like promotion letters, so if there's this employee you hate that much, hit me up..that employee would gladly type their own sack letter and still give you a shout out on Facebook).  Back to the matter though, some addictions wouldn't require you having to check into rehab or something, some addictions might just end up being habits or preferences....doesn't mean they're not addictions.

As human beings we engage in a wide range of activities e.g sleeping, eating, hitting the gym, talking, walking, chatting online, having sex, seeing movies, having sex, maintaining relationships with friends, family, co-workers and bae, and lest I forget...having sex e.t.c. On a daily basis, we do lots of stuff...but the moment one particular activity frequently  hinders you from taking part in another activity, EVEN WHEN YOU WANT TO; *in Falz's voice* ladies and gentlemen of the online, you're very well on your way to becoming an addict. That's the long and short of it.

So, it all boils down to you. Do you think that the time you use on the social media impedes your ability to focus on other important activities? I think, within you, you already know where your answer leaves you..
Till the next time, i don't know when that's going to be but i can guarantee you it's going to be a fun topic, this one too serious abeg! One love, baby!

P.S. I'm responsible for what I say and not how you understand it.
